The harbour of Seyda Neen in the Unity recreation of Morrowind.

TES3Unity is a recreation of Morrowind’s engine in Unity. Started in 2016, with a first version in 2017, the project uses data from an installation of the original game to let players explore its world on screen or with a virtual reality headset.

It builds on TESUnity, started by Cole Dean Shepherd. I first contributed VR support, before developing my own fork to work further on rendering, performance and interaction.

From a viewer to an immersive experience

The work included VR controller integration, teleportation and smooth locomotion. The aim was to make this world explorable with the interactions people expect from a headset.

The graphics work provided a testing ground for different Unity rendering paths, post-processing, runtime normal map generation and water rendering. The technical foundation evolved from Unity 5 to Unity 6.7, with Windows and Meta Quest among the platforms used for development.

Contributing to an existing project

The project remains an exploration sandbox rather than a complete recreation of the game. World loading and VR work; animation, scripts and gameplay still need development to reproduce the full original experience.

It illustrates an approach I enjoy: understanding an existing codebase, adding a new use for it and gradually improving how it behaves. The public repository preserves the code and the history of these contributions.
