OXRSys is an OpenXR runtime designed for macOS. It works with Unity, Unreal Engine, Godot and native applications that use OpenXR. It connects virtual reality applications running on a Mac to streaming clients on VR headsets. The project brings together native rendering, video transport and a desktop application for configuring the system.
PC VR in the macOS environment
The runtime supports both Apple Silicon and Intel architectures. It provides a Metal rendering path and a Vulkan path through MoltenVK. H.264 and H.265 video encoding uses VideoToolbox, with network and USB transport.
Written in SwiftUI, OXRSys Home brings together runtime registration, compatible application launching, settings and telemetry. Clients are being developed for Meta Quest, Pico and Vision Pro, alongside simulators for macOS and iOS. Their validation status is documented separately in the repository.
Unity, Unreal Engine, Godot and native applications
The runtime makes it possible to develop VR applications on a Mac with Unity, Unreal Engine or Godot, as well as native applications built directly on OpenXR. This standard provides the common interface between those environments and OXRSys.
For Unreal Engine, the project also includes a fork of the OpenXR plugin. It adds a macOS rendering path using Metal and can be installed directly in an Unreal project.
My work covers the whole pipeline: application interfaces, image and input exchange, viewing clients and configuration tools. The challenge is to make these components work together consistently in an interactive, latency-sensitive setting.
