The Lost Maze is a first-person exploration game. Players make their way through mazes, collect treasures and find the exit while avoiding traps and monsters. The project has also become a continuing thread for experimenting with different rendering and development technologies.
From the browser to a native game
The first experiment dates back to 2012, using WebGL with Three.js. I then rewrote the game with XNA, followed by MonoGame, and published a version on the Microsoft Store for the launch of Windows 8. Christophe Belleuvre also contributed to the first version.
A later rebuild with Unity allowed the game and its levels to evolve. The earlier versions available on itch.io offer two episodes and twenty levels, RPG-inspired combat and two movement modes: conventional controls or movement closer to classic dungeon crawlers. They can be played with a keyboard and mouse or a gamepad, in French and English.
Revisiting the foundations in 2026
In 2026, I started another rebuild around a custom engine in C++, SDL3 and SDL_GPU. The game’s core concept remains a practical point of comparison when working on a new technical foundation.
This rebuild is separate from the versions already available to download. The repositories for the XNA and Unity versions, the map editor and Maze3D preserve the different stages of the project.
