Coding since age 6 / Professional since 2010

I love
building things.

Applications, games and engines, but also robots and aircraft. I enjoy building things, understanding the parts of a project and bringing them together. I discovered code at six and made it my profession in 2010.

  • C++20, C# and .NET
  • Unity, Unreal Engine and Godot
  • Native applications and tools
  • Real-time rendering, simulation and XR
  • Cross-platform development
  • Maintaining open-source projects

Building things is the common thread

What I enjoy is taking an idea and turning it into something that works. A game people can play, a useful application, a robot that moves or an aircraft being assembled. I like learning and experimenting as I build, solving problems and watching the project take shape.

The first lines of code

It all started at six with Locomotive BASIC. That was my first encounter with code, before I really got into programming in 2000 with Dark Basic and began creating my own games.

2000–2012: learning by doing

After Dark Basic, I moved on to C, which was quite a struggle! Around 2004, I spent hours on the Site du Zéro learning C, SDL, C++, Qt, HTML, CSS and PHP.

I also spent a lot of time with Java, which we used extensively in my first year of the DUT computer science course. The desire to share grew alongside the desire to build: I wrote Java tutorials focused on game development for the Site du Zéro community.

In 2008, I discovered XNA and deployed my first project to an Xbox 360. Running my own code on a console gave those projects a new dimension.

I launched demonixis.net in 2011 to publish my tutorials. Among other topics, I explained how to develop Flash applications entirely in code, using ActionScript 3 on Linux with the Flex compiler. I followed that with MonoGame tutorials on Linux, an environment whose challenges I also enjoyed.

After developing small games with Flixel, I started using THREE.js around 2012. The browser became another place to build and share my games.

2013–2016: going deeper, then building my own tools

Bringing Unity into my work in 2013 was a turning point. I focused more of my efforts on an engine I could explore in depth. It also marked the start of my virtual reality experiments with the Oculus Rift DK1.

I continued working with MonoGame alongside Unity and started developing C3DE in 2015. Building my own engine helped me understand its components, decide how they should work and create the tools I needed.

In 2016, I started using Unreal Engine 4. Unity and Unreal became my two main engines, with native projects and MonoGame providing other ways to build and experiment.

Building for others, and sharing what I learn

That hands-on approach runs through my professional career: nearly ten years at Wanadev, followed by a progression from Senior Developer to Principal Software Engineer at Novelab. I have been freelancing since March 2026; since June, I have worked regularly on the Infinite Flight simulator as a freelance Senior Software Engineer.

I choose tools according to what needs to be built, the target platforms and the team that will maintain the project. What matters to me is building a usable solution, understanding its constraints and being able to keep improving it.

I favour native technologies whenever possible to build fast, cross-platform applications. I also use LLMs to make porting easier and adapt my codebases to different systems.

With pressure on RAM and storage, I believe in respecting users’ resources. I aim to limit memory use, installation size and generated files, keeping applications lightweight without filling up their storage.

My personal projects, tutorials and open-source work extend that approach. They let me create tools, share what I learn and keep building, both on screen and in the workshop.

In practice

The tools
I use every day.

A working environment built around native software, cross-platform development and technologies I can understand and extend.

MacBook Air M5

My main work computer for developing and experimenting on macOS.

Fedora 45 & KDE

My Linux environment, which remains central to my work and cross-platform projects.

Native applications

C++20, GLFW and Dear ImGui for straightforward applications and tools.

Multimedia, 3D & XR

C++20, SDL3, Dear ImGui and SDL_GPU for desktop, mobile and virtual reality projects.

Unity, Unreal Engine & Godot

Full-featured engines for demanding projects and specific requirements, from games to simulation.

Real-time 3D on the web

Three.js and Babylon.js for interactive 3D experiences, right in the browser.

Beyond code

Curiosity
doesn’t stop there.

Making, playing, flying, observing. My interests open up different perspectives and feed into my projects.

Music & sound creation

I play guitar, bass and drums. Music production software extends that practice, letting me record and develop my ideas.

Aviation & aircraft building

I fly three-axis microlights and am also working towards a LAPL. I started building a Gaz’Aile 2; the project journal records the stages of that adventure.

The Gaz’Aile 2 build journal

Model aircraft & FPV

Model planes, helicopters and first-person-view flying are among my interests. Another way to bring flying, mechanics and electronics together.

Pilot Yann’s videos

Robotics & artificial intelligence

I 3D-printed and built two InMoov robots, developing their electronics and software before selling them. A third is under construction, with local AI and structural reinforcement inspired by my experience with wood and composite aircraft construction.

Astronomy & photography

Stargazing and astrophotography have a special place in my life: taking time to observe, understand and capture the world around us.

Getting outdoors

Rollerblading, skateboarding and cycling get me away from the screen and offer a change of pace.

Open source

I maintain open-source projects to share my tools, improve the engines I use and open my experiments to other developers.
